Heirs, episodes 11 and 12: That one good scene

ews20131114heirs_kimwoobin_parkshinhye1

Sorry, this blog has become an “Heirs” blog.

Let’s cut right to it: Choi Young-do, I, what? Huh??? He was my biggest gripe at the start of the story: there were sparks of something interesting in his character but he was just too terrible and frightening to justify whatever interesting qualities he might have as a love rival to Tan. “Heirs” is a G-rated drama but if Choi Young-do were a movie character, I’m sure he would’ve killed some peoples and those people’s moms and/or puppies by the 30-minute mark, and that doesn’t make a good, realistic romantic interest to root for, no matter how sometimes charming the bad-boy facade.

But 12 episodes in and Choi Young-do might be the most interesting of our three leads and developing nicely in layers, too. I read some general conspiracy theory-ish spoilers that I’m hoping will prove false, because I don’t really care about the plights of anybody on this drama anymore (except Lee Bona! I wuff her), and I’d rather Choi Young-do continue developing, even if he ends up being the loser of this whole triangular spectacular.

Drama styling tips #7a: Heirs, episodes 1 to 10

ews20131110heirs_krystal1

Drama styling tips are actually my favorite posts but I haven’t done one in two years since “City Hunter.” Then I actually sat down to compile one and this is what my desktop looked like as I was sorting through images, and I remembered why I haven’t done one in two years. Whoops.

This is an extremely image-heavy post given the huge cast, so you’ve been warned!

…and now let’s talk Kim Tan

ews20131107heirs_leeminho_tv

What IS this?!

I’m flabbergasted, because the last two episodes of “Heirs” are showing that Kim Tan is just as terrible as Choi Young-do, except he’s more subtle about it, contrasting with Choi Young-do’s obvious shows of hostility. I’m starting to think Choi Young-do might be more harmless of the two in the long-term, since his actions are outward, whereas Kim Tan is nice and then he’s nice and then he’s nice and then BAM, he’s a huge asshole. He plays just as dirty as Young-do, and it’s just mean stuff.

I want him and Choi Young-do to just end each other Gladiator style. THUMBS DOWN.

Heirs, episodes 1 to 6, off to a weak start

ews20131027heirs01

The new whammy drama in town: Heirs.

For old time’s sake, I re-skimmed a couple episodes of Boys Over Flowers, because, uhhhhhh, similarities. The people behind “Heirs” were careful to not link their drama to BOF, but the connections are being made by watchers anyway, and they’re really, really not wrong for doing so. The premise of BOF got transitioned over into a new drama, swap out a new cast — but keep Lee Minho, because he’s the anchor! — and swap out a new school. Everybody is still insanely wealthy and everybody is still terrible in their richness.

Triple the cast of extraneous characters with no real bearing on the story, add six sprinklings extra of bad English, and BOF 2013 has been served. Bon appétit!

Upcoming dramas and my thoughts

Someone said to me on Formspring that they noticed I’ve been reblogging a lot of Exo on Tumblr, and if that means I’m “back” into K-pop. I guess you can say that based on my K-pop activity as of late. I started watching dramas religiously mid-2009-ish onwards and while I still knew what happened to groups, I didn’t follow anyone intensely and then my energy for K-pop seriously took a hit in 2010 when 1) the dramas got even better and 2) DBSK split.

It’s May and maybe there will be an upswing of things in the second part of the year, but 2012 has been extremely disappointing in terms of drama quality and output. This seems to be the year of cable, which offers a healthy number of alternatives, but that’s not enough to take away the extremely bad taste that MBC, KBS, and SBS have left in my mouth thus far. It’s drama after drama of mediocrity and sometimes it’s even dipping into feces territory -_-

So there are a ton of dramas in the horizon that are in the midst of production, or at the very least, have casts and I thought I’d weigh in on what I think of them before they premiere.

…And guess what? The rest of 2012 ain’t looking too hot either. With that little to work with, reblogging awkward screencaps of half-blinking Kris and Hangeng occupying the same space, gifs of Kyungsoo choking on water, etc. seem necessary.

COME ON DRAMA GODS, THROW ME A BONE HERE.
