I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS PERFORMANCE.
That dancer planted her crotch on his face!
He did a strip tease!
HE’S MOVING LIKE JAGGER.

To be completely frank, I watched 90% of the performance like this:

But in all seriousness, this is one of the reasons why I really like Ryeowook, who probably doesn’t get enough love from fans and non-fans alike.

Someone’s getting fucking fired tomorrow, but lo and behold, Changmin and Yunho practicing to a 5-membered version of Maximum.

I love it when someone leaks new practice videos of SM’s army practicing in their famed sky-blue wallpapered dance room. These videos show works-in-progress and there are too many over-polished and over-gleamed appearances in K-pop — works-in-progress are much desired.

This version of the song proves one important thing to me.

I think Junsu, Yoochun, and Jaejoong’s singing is better when they sing SM produced songs. There is no hard and fast rule on this and it’s mostly my preference, but I just never really liked JYJ’s stuff post-split. Their JYJ song style is different: the dance tracks were a little too hip-hop-y for them, the ballads were a little too tragic and reeked too much of the an-idol-composed-this syndrome. (I still haven’t listened to “In Heaven” in full.)

What to say? This is a well-deserved comeback to be sure, but it’s underwhelming.

For one, it looks like Dana and Sunday have forgotten how to dance. Dana and Sunday were never the dancers of the group anyway, and on top of that, CSJH was never a particularly strong dance group, so watching the two dance has just been awful so far.

And the other more important thing is — this song is a good example of the sort of stuff that is wrong with the Kpop sound.

This is probably one of the funnest Kpop performances I’ve seen in a while. I would kind of kill to watch them perform this at some sort of venue where I can jump and dance. This song is not innovative to be sure, but it’s just the right amount of 2PM fun that we’ve been missing from our lives ever since their earth shattering Jay scandal, no? Everyone looks so good and the energy of the song fits 2PM perfectly. It’s also really age appropriate, which is something I can almost never say about anything Kpop related ever. (Grown ass girls holding lollipops as props, underage boys wooing women twice their age, adolescent boys dressing up like 50 year old bikers…)

Adolescent boys one-shotting and gyrating feverishly: PERFECTION.

My one and only complaint, and this is a repetitive complaint, is: why is the Junho to Chansung line ration always like 1:50? Who the fuck is paying money to listen to Chansung sing? To even open his mouth, in fact? Don’t get me wrong, I l-o-v-e Chansung but it’s just some sort of worldly injustice to keep a good Junho down to let Chansung rap and sing teeth-gnashingly bad.

To show you that I am a delightfully delinquent blogger, I will humor you by answering a formspring question that someone asked me a year ago (I started this post in July, 2010). He/she asked,

Most impressive live performances?

Kicking off with you-know-who:

DBSK’s “Five in the Black” concert

There’s just something so impressive and attractive about trying really hard.

All in all I think DBSK’s greatest achievement as a group was their success in Japan, and their Japanese concerts are nice markers in the different points of their careers. FITB was the tip of the scale: when they finally succeeded on some measurable standard that they and their companies had delineated for them, but not so successful that they could stop striving. They were good enough to be recognized, but they still had something to prove. There is something rawer about FITB that I don’t think can be found in any of DBSK’s other concerts. I’m also biased because I really like how they were dressed and mmmm suits :3
