Drama styling tips #4: Bad Guy

I’m all about the styling of Han Ga-in’s Moon Jae-in in this one.

The guys are standard suits and chaebol-wear, and everyone looks sharp, but it’s nothing to write home about. Moon Jae-in, on the other hand, I love. I’m not that interested in how the Hong family daughters are dressed because it looks like typical expensive-women wear, and that bores me.

The one winning thing about a good majority of Jae-in’s outfits is that her shoes give her rather girly get-ups a sharper, harder edge. She almost always wear badass biker boots, either with stacked heels or no heels at all. Everything else about her outfits are extremely girly — pastel blouses, slouchy button-downs — but once you look down at her shoes, the feeling completely changes.

Bad Guy, episodes 1-5

So far, the only thing that’s really keeping me invested in this drama is the acting from Kim Nam-gil and Kim Jae-wook. The story is been-there-done-that-and-better and I shrug constantly when Han Ga-in or Oh Yeon-soo are on screen.

(P.S. Already groaning at the fact that this is going to be 20 episodes long. By about episode 14, I’m going to start cursing excessively at illogical plot turns and ridiculous lapses in judgment.)

(P.P.S. Is it weird that I find all of the characters’ names really pretty? Tae-ra, Mo-nae, Jae-in, Gun-wook.)

Drama styling tips #2: Cinderella’s Sister

This drama definitely doesn’t have the same variety as Personal Taste in terms of styling, but it also doesn’t rely on youth and city chicness to tell a story about the characters’ lives, which I feel Personal Taste did.

The best dressed character is easily Chun Jung-myung’s Ki-hoon. There’s also a difference in styling as reflected by the characters’ ages — the younger Ki-hoon was more colorful, and the older is more somber. The younger versions of the two female leads were students, so there was nothing special going on. As adults, Hyo-sun is made to be the more stylish one, whereas Eun-jo is the more practical one.

I know that styling and visuals are supposed to complement a show, but as a viewer of this drama, my mind was only on one thing: the story and its characters’ interactions with each other, so while the styling is never bad, the quality of the story definitely takes precedent here.

(Yoochun is seriously messing with the ambiance right now, but you know what, I’ll salvage whatever loyalty I have for DBSK and try to be enthusiastic about his presence on the cast.)

I’ve never been this excited about any cast ever. This is almost like a wet dream. All that it’s missing is some Kim Bum. Throw him in and we can CALL IT ~~AN ORGY~~ A DAY.

(Omg, seriously flailing right now. Hold me.)

Current state of K-drama affairs #6: Chun Jung-myung

Yeah, this was definitely in the making for a while now.

I usually judge how popular an actor is with the younger fangirls based on how big his/her photogallery is at AsianFanatic’s forums. My theory is that older fangirls tend to like older guys, and older fangirls don’t usually do things like update a star’s photogallery consistently, whereas the younger ones do. Now, I’m sure there are tons of people who do what I just said they don’t, but bear with me. And I’ve observed that Mr. Chun’s fanbase consists mainly of girls who are non-teens. Based on his pathetic 3 page gallery, my hunch stands correct. Babyface has a relatively low tween fanbase, which is totally fine by me because MORE FOR AMY!

Anyhoo. I am proud to say that my longstanding crush on Mr. Chun now spans three dramas and not just a springy fling because he’s in Cinderella’s Sister. I first watched him in What’s Up Fox, then Cinderella’s Sister, and now, Fashion 70s. I’m sure when I have time, I’ll start on Goodbye Solo too, but for some reason Goodbye looks like there’d be a cancer patient in there somewhere, so my drama radar is suspicious and tingly at the mo’.

Prior to What’s Up, I didn’t completely get the hype. After, I understood it. During Cinderella, I was totally stirred. After Fashion 70s, SQUEE. (I also think that three dramas is the most I’ve ever watched that starred the same actor.)

Drama styling tips #1: Personal Taste

Or, AKA, your one-way guide to dress like a metrosexual man.

There’s some great styling going on in “Personal Taste.” It’s not too flashy and I love that there are so many classic outfits. I’m a sucker for boys and girls in preppy gear. Lee Min-ho looked outrageous and ridiculous in “Boys Over Flowers” but in “Personal Taste” he actually looks age-appropriate. The dude has the body of a model and it was completely wasted in BOF. Plus, it’s not like I don’t already want to bone him every time he’s in a scene, but now he looks good too.

With Son Yeh-jin, I get that they’re trying to make Gae-in “quirky” by throwing random things together but those let’s-mix-patterns-with-colors-with-ugly-shoes-with-ridic-pants outfits are uninteresting to me. I know that the people behind the show made her look more “presentable” after the audience complained she looked too sloppy (giving her a straighter haircut, making her look less sloppy at home, etc), but Gae-in’s best outfits are usually the ones she wears to job interviews, lol.

Cinderella’s Sister, episode 5

Now we’ll start the recaps in earnest.

I had really wanted a continuation of everybody in their younger years. Like I’ve said for “Will It Snow for Christmas,” I would not mind watching a melodrama involving teens, because god knows adults can be such idiots. Another reason I guess they had to move on is that they cast Taec, and apparently he’s the only person who can’t play a younger version of himself, while everyone else can. Not that I don’t love kid!Jung Woo. He’s the best; I laugh at every scene he’s in.

(On another note, I am feverishly trying to churn out all of CS’ recaps so I can be up-to-date and recap as the episodes air. I find that it’s really difficult to write recaps for eps that have aired for one-two weeks in the past because you already know what happens afterward and it skews your point of view. So yes, if there are like a bajillion consecutive recaps for this drama in the next week or so, bear with me.)

Personal Taste, episodes 3 and 4

During the first week of broadcast, I wasn’t particularly convinced of this show’s merits, despite the fact that I had anticipated it. Then episodes three and four came the second week, and I was pretty swayed, mostly due to the fact that Son Yeh-jin’s veteran acting skills were really kicking in and convincing me of the Gae-in character, who I didn’t particularly like in the beginning.
