Mary Stayed Out All Night, episodes 1 to 4

Apologies for the inactivity. Life is very all-consuming right now.

I feel like most people who I’ve talked to, when they’re busy and they watch a drama, it’s easier to enjoy it because watching a drama is obviously a source of entertainment and it’s serves as a way to escape temporarily. But I feel like for me, when I’m busy and cranky and exhausted and I have some downtime to relax in front of the computer and I watch a drama, it’s even easier for me to dislike one because I don’t try to make excuses for it, nor do I try too much to reason out why a drama is this way.

Maybe I’m just cranky because this is not turning out the way I want it to, but “Mary” is not working out for me. I am not enjoying any part of this, despite Kim Jae-wook’s overwhelming hotness.

I feel like this is the kind of drama “norm” for Jang Geun-seok — light and funny romantic comedies — but completely a step back for Moon Geun-young and Kim Jae-wook. It’s good that they get to show they have a range in their acting, but their characters are driving me up the wall, and neither one of them so far has allowed the actors to give a more nuanced and subtle performance, which is my biggest problem.

(And just as an aside, I’m not doing caps for this series. Recaps are not my thing, I’ve learned. As someone on my Formspring so nicely coined it for me, I do opinioncaps. And I will probably do opinioncaps til the end of time, so no turn-by-turn episode recaps from me!)

(Why must they make all my favorites the second fiddle? Why! Why! WHY? WAE.)

This is the year of the best casting news ever. Moon Geun-young is the fucking icing on the cake. I’m so stoked that I’m *almost* okay with Sungkyunkwan Scandal ending and not seeing my babyfaces so that we can get Mary Stayed Out All Night pronto.

I’m so spoiled now that my mind is starting to wander.

Imagine a drama with Lee Min-ho and Kim Jae-wook.

Or Jang Geun-seok with Lee Min-ho.

Or Song Joong-ki as best-buds turned rivals with Yoo Ah-in?

Oh god, I’m getting feverish just thinking of the possibilities. If those don’t work, can we at least get Song Joong-ki/Yoo Ah-in/Kim Jae-wook a lead role sometime within the next half a year? Make it happen, Drama Gods.

(And wait until Joo Ji-hoon comes back from the army. PARTY, LET’S PARTY, IT’S PARTY TIME.)

Current state of drama affairs #3: Jang Geun Seok

Don’t even play like you didn’t see this coming.

I feel like I tell this story every chance I get, but I first got into JGS when I watched Hong Gil Dong. That was an insane period of picture-chasing, video-watching, and fangirl-tarding. I love his speaking voice and I like that he improves with every project. I don’t really care about “Beethoven Virus” but rediscovering how good he is now makes me want to go back to all his older stuff and give it a shot.

You’re Beautiful, episode 9

Maybe I’m over-hyping this show all by myself, but my reactions throughout this entire episode were all pretty much near-catastrophic squees. I haven’t had this much fun watching a K-drama ever. The pace of this drama is really smooth, the writing is smart, and the cast is wonderful. Even though I have my grievances towards Shinwoo/Minam not working out, Taekyung/Minam is written really well and really believably.

My brief rundowns are turning out to be not-so-brief anymore…

You’re Beautiful, episode 8

This episode was less slapstick than some of the other episodes, but definitely the best one yet. Some really nice and meaningful dialogue that doesn’t feel heavy-handed, and in combination with the lighter scenes, it’s win-win all around. Yay for a drama that really keeps getting better and better!

(Technical note: For those who read my blog via Google Reader, Feedburner, etc, I’ve implemented a way to ensure that entries that are cut at a certain point on the main page of the blog appear likewise on the feed. This is a problem I never got around to solving when I did my “Boys Over Flowers” recaps, so full entries used to show up on feeds, and thus mooting my point of placing the recap text behind a cut!

Another thing, I’ve only ever fully recapped one drama and because I still sometimes have random spasms of fear just thinking about how bad an experience that was, I won’t be recapping “You’re Beautiful” in its entirety. But I will try as best as I can to give brief rundowns of what happens in the episodes. I feel a little too self-indulgent [operative word being "too"] just blabbing on and on and on about my thoughts of each episode without giving at least some frame of reference as to what goes on in each episode.)

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
