Song of the day

So I’ve finished Triple and, surprise, I liked Lee Jung Jae so much that I wanted to watch more stuff he’s in.

Meh. His last project was “Air City” and I like K-dramas, but I don’t like em that much. (So I’ll just read the recaps that Dramabeans did :D)

Anyhoo, I remembered as I was browsing recaps that DBSK did two songs for the Air City OST, one of which is one of my fave DBSK songs. Really brings back the memories:

And now, whenever I think about DBSK …. *goes to cry*

And SM in general … *goes to cry more*

A-Nation ’09

I’m pretty happy to say that I’ve been really satisfied with all their major live performances lately. I’m turning out to like “Stand by U” a lot more than I did originally, and I think it’s because I really hate the ballads of theirs that sound gut-wrenching, heart-wrenching, brain-dissolving, gravity-defying. “Bolero” is great and “Love in the Ice” is great, but I like ‘em light and simple. And as for “Survivor,” I don’t know why so many people don’t like this song! I love this song, moreso after watching all their live performances of it. I wish Yoochun stopped purposely letting that GUTTURAL scream leave his mouth, but all is good, son.

One thing I’ve always really liked about DBSK is their solidarity as a group. I think they’re one of the last boy groups of the “older” gen of Kpop boy groups that didn’t branch out too much from what they started out as when they first debuted. None of this sub-group, overseas group, MC-ing on the side, solo projects, daily drama actor, game show hosting BS. That stuff is all good and fun and I keep up with a lot of those things, but at the end of the day I like groups that…act like groups. (Where you at, Kibum????)

…Which is why I’m completely uncomfortable with Yunho doing his own drama, Changmin doing his own drama, Jaejoong & Yoochun doing a single, Junsu doing god knows what. They’re at their best when they feed off each other’s energy and that energy exists at its maximum when they’re performing on stage together. Jaejoong and Yoochun doing their rendition of “Begin” is effing whack. Yunho is a whack actor. Changmin I can’t say too much yet but I’m sure it won’t be too pretty. Junsu is only so funny/awkward because the others are around him to force him into that supreme state of discomfort, lol.

So, moral of the story – don’t break up and keep performing together as artists please. Or I will cry.

Yaaa~

I always find the shadiest ways/shadiest parts of the day to rediscover my appreciation for DBSK. So I was sitting in my room in the dark getting ready to shut my computer off and go to bed when I randomly decided I really needed to clear up my desktop. I did do that and then I randomly came across this forgotten episode of a show I downloaded because DBSK was on it during their fourth album promotion. I randomly skimmed across the episode and then came across them doing this acappella.

And they are still as gloriously good as I always remembered them being.

DBSK acappellas are a bright spot in my memories of the gone days of my fangirling because there are so few Kpop acts who do this. Acappella is really *their* thing. Everyone in the biz is really obsessed with having “good vocals” and “power dances” but acappella is totally an art that no company in Kpop is really focusing on, so it’s nice to know that these guys still regard acappella as an important part of their set lists. I also got into DBSK in general through an acappella of theirs, so I’m a bit biased.

In my trek to grow up, my dad always told me that people like children who are “always good,” so that when the kids do go astray from time to time, they get cut some slack. That’s totally the case with DBSK. No matter how much they may suck (and lately, Yoochun has sucketh hard), if they’re able to do something like this performance of “Bolero” at Ontama Carnival, then ALL IS GOOD.

DBSK will always be idols and they will never be idols. Nobody in the biz right now can do what they did in that perf. For me, “Bolero” is one of those songs that never appealed to me. It was way too long, the MV was boring as haaale, and it just didn’t sound very spectacular. It’s not one of those songs you can listen to over and over and over, because the dynamic of the song is strong enough that once is enough. In that sense, it’s exactly like “Love in the Ice,” and why the Korean performances of the song have utterly and completely killed my love for it. You can’t overdo a song like “Bolero” or “Love in the Ice.”

But once you get that *one* good performance…man, everything fades to grey. This performance of “Bolero” = “Love in the Ice” at Soul Power. (Maybe the perf of LitI was better outdoors, but I don’t like that version just because there is no broadcast version of it and sometimes fancams are just not enough.)

There are so many parts to potentially fuck up in “Bolero” and you feel like you have to hold your breath through all of it, but man — that bridge was PERFECT. I feel like if I were any of them, that bridge is worth all the blood and sweat they’ve shed as trainees and as musical artists.

Oh and just in case anyone thought I needed to say this: Junsu, I LOVE YOU. He was holding his mic with both hands. ;_;
