Sungkyunkwan Scandal, episodes 1 and 2

I was never really interested in the premise of this drama because I’m feeling quite blah at the thought of another cross-dressing girl drama. I was willing to by-pass that and watch this if it had a good cast, and I thought that Song Joong-ki and Yoo Ah-in were good choices.

What wasn’t, is Yoochun and to a lesser extent, Park Min-young. I’m very irrationally angry at dramas that cast idols with no acting experience to take on big roles. I know there does exist a number of people who are of one profession, who go into another without ever having done it before and end up being good at that other profession as well. But from what I can tell of the dramas I’ve watched with idols taking on really big roles is that they’re better off as idols.

If they were really better off as actors, they would probably debut as an actor first, then randomly get plopped into idoldom as to boost their popularity, and then go back into acting once they’ve reached that level of popularity (ie, Sulli and Heechul). It makes me angry because it’s not like there’s a lack of good actors in Korea who can do the job a thousand times better than the idols that are chosen for the parts.

Far East

I’ve gotten the chance to photograph Far East twice now — once at ISA New York and once at Epik High’s concert — and sometimes I don’t even need to try very hard to make them look good because they always look like they just stepped off a men’s mag editorial. I love their style and it gives me glee to feel like a fashion photog :P

Haven’t done one of these in a while:

Was cleaning my pig-sty of a desk and came across so much old ticket stubs, a bajillion instant photos, and so much makeup. From top left, rotating clockwise: photo taken on the day of the USA vs. Brazil friendly, lipstick, mascara, cellphone adhesive thingies that cost AN ARM AND A LEG, eyeliner, expense book (that I kept up with for like a month and then stopped), ticket stub from soccer game.

Season of changes

Here’s some once-in-a-blue-moon admin stuff: New layout!

Say bye to the old and annyong to the new. Trust me when I say that I’ve been working on this layout on-and-off for about six months. Also trust me when I say I’m a lazy shit. :)

No huge changes to the overall scheme of the site, but I think I’ve always been a little iffy with two column layouts (blame that on years of Livejournal use) so here goes this one.

Bye bye, old layout! You’ve served me well for over a year.

I notice that Victoria really likes wearing wedges, and I really am not a fan of wedges. I feel like they semi-cheapened the outfit she was wearing. Wedges just aren’t very red-carpety. Sulli’s outfit on the other hand, the bomb. She dresses well and poses well and is just so gorgeous, but I think it’s sort of sickening that she’s only 15/16. 15 year-old girls should really be hanging out with friends and talking about stupid things at sleepovers, and not attending fashion shows and appearing in W magazine editorials :( She’ll miss her youth when she gets older, but that’s another rant for another day!

Happy 2nd!

It’s the blog’s second birthday!

I started the blog two years ago on this day. I’ve kept a plethora of blogs, from personal, to fandom-y, and I started this one primarily to write about all my interests without getting too much into the personal stuff. And it’s worked so far — I hope!

I have interest in so many things, and I wanted a place where I can talk about pop, fashion, sociocultural issues and show pictures of things I’ve done, without pigeon-holing myself into one specific category. And one thing I’ve always struggled with in terms of talking about my interests is being proud of all of them and what they say about me.

There are certain things that I always thought were cooler and more “presentable” than others — writing about a Chanel bag is cool, writing about 13 boys dancing to bad music is not. Generally speaking.

So I found that I unintentionally always catered to a certain audience and saved the Asian pop stuff for the Asian pop audience, and saved the fashion stuff for the fashion audience and saved the photos for the photo people. That gets tiring, and I wanted a new place where I could just keep a blog that is representative of me through my interests, instead of keeping a blog that is about one interest, written by me. I’ve come to terms with my interests and my writing ability so that I can tell people, hey, it’s great that you come to my blog for fashion posts, but I also like it when boys do stupid things on variety shows and I will write about it, and you should still keep in mind that no one interest is greater or better than the other.

I’m uncomfortable with people thinking that Asian pop is just a bunch of weird Asianphiles who like to listen to songs in languages they don’t understand and then dabble in kawaii shit, and I’m uncomfortable with people thinking that fashion blogs are only real fashion blogs if there’s a pretty girl standing in pretty shoes carrying a pretty bag while posing in front of the camera like they don’t know they’re being photographed, while looking lost and posing hunched over.

So, this blog is my attempt to write about all these interests without feeling embarrassed of any of them, or that they should be reserved for only those who understand that type of subculture.

For everyone who’s been reading since the early days, I salute you! I’m glad I haven’t scared you off :) And for those who are new to the blog, welcome and enjoy!
