Man, I’m so over the Kpop music scene. Everyone tries so hard to out-do each other, but everyone for some reason, ends up looking like the everyone else anyway. How about we just concentrate on making good music, good videos, and good dances and call it a day? Instead of forcing these ridiculous concepts and images and blah blah blah and then getting accused of plagiarism left and right?

SHINee is not usually a group I pick on for this sort of stuff because I really enjoy their music and their efforts as artists, but SM is slowly turning them into gimmicky little marketing ploys and it drives me up the wall.

…Enjoy these?

Every time f(x) comes back to promote, this happens.

Disclaimer: Through no fault of their own, Amber haters have chosen to piss me off at the wrong time of the semester. Stress levels are insane right now and I probably shouldn’t even be posting about Kpop, but you’ve been warned: lots of expletives, straight-up ranting, bar none.

Every time some socio-cultural issue comes up in Kpop, international fans are so fast to throw down the “Damn, Korea sucks.” “Korea is so conservative.” “Korea is so sexist.” “Those are some fucked up beauty standards.” “Damn, plastic surgery sucks, girls have it so hard in Korea.”

And then Amber came along and turned a lot of those international fans into flaming hypocrites.

Yep, she doesn’t dress like a girl. Yep, she’s always been dressing like this. Yep, SM is probably exploiting that preference of hers. Yep, Amber’s voice is deeper than the rest of her groups’ voices. Yep, Amber looks like Donghae. But yep, Amber is still a mother.fucking. girl.

I’m not going to lie, I think that within Korea’s extremely precarious social norms, it would definitely help Amber if the stylists that work with her stop literally dressing her like a boy and making her take the role of a boy in commercials. But you know what, to a certain extent, I think it’s also good for social progress that you’ve got someone like Amber, who’s outright challenging the gender norms. She will most definitely get a lot of shit for it but someone needs to be a pioneer.

You think Nickhun and Alexander have it so easy because they’re just that awesome and Korea finds their non-Koreanness just that fascinating? No. Hangeng was there five years ago to wear those fucking masks so that they don’t have to, and he was there to slowly build his reputation so that he could pave the way for non-Koreans to work in the Korean entertainment industry. You think Big Bang and SS501 are doing so well in Japan because Japan just magically loves their music and their winning personalities? No. There were people like DBSK who had to suffer through the shitty sound stages that no one put effort into because no one gave a fuck about these Koreans, and the complete album failures and the complete lack of audience enthusiasm, just so they can pave the way for subsequent groups. The entertainment industry is hard for people to participant in, even for people who grew up consuming it, and it’s even harder for a foreigner and for anyone who doesn’t conform to the norm.

Amber is doing that same thing and she’s challenging gender tropes. It’s about time a female idol fucking challenged gender in Korea.

It fucking disgusts me that people insist that she would be “better” if she dressed more like a girl. Would be more appealing if she wore some makeup.

Yeah, do you also want her to get some double eyelids? Get bigger boobs? Shave her jaw? Wear dresses that drop right below her vagina? Dry hump a pole? A chair? Lee Seung-gi?

There is no BETTER. Amber is perfect the way she is. Like I’ve said before, within Korea, Amber is going to have a hard time being who she is. It would help her if SM didn’t do so much with her image all at once, but what can you do, it’s a business. People want in for the “wow” factor.

And for fuck’s sake, Kpop is 95% male idols who look, dress, and style like girls. Sometimes they even dress in drag. For fun. Why is anybody complaining that Amber looks too much like a boy and that’s the reason they just can’t “get” into her? Why do the guys get to be adorable while Amber gets to be the fucking freak?

Don’t even give me that “I don’t like her because she’s not good at what she does” bullshit. I won’t argue on the merit of Amber’s skill, but if we’re going to talk about that, then Sulli is completely irrelevant to the group besides her good looks and her girlish aegyo charm. Yeah, I said it.

It’s just so fucking offensive to me when people throw shit out like “s/he,” or even better, “it,” when referring to Amber’s gender. Are you kidding me? There are a lot of Kpop fans who are teens and pre-teens and don’t have exposure to this kind of stuff, but there are also those who are older and do have more exposure and there’s still this kind of mindless insensitivity. The international fandom likes to pride itself on being more progressive and liberal and blah blah blah, but it obviously has a long way to go. They may be paying lip service to the fancy idea of being socially progressive, but you bring up Amber and we’re back to square one.

In the future, I hope there are more girls like Amber in Kpop. Until Korean girls stop killing themselves trying to be the kind of “girl” that everyone else thinks a girl “should” be, lots of things need to change. Until everyone stops trying to achieve an identical standard of beauty, we need more people who are comfortable in their own skin despite not being what everyone else wants them to be.

Screw the haters. Rock on, Amber, rock on.

Select members of SNSD + 2PM are in a new commercial together for Everland Caribbean Bay.

To be honest, after I watched the commercial, I wasn’t sure if I was watching a promo for gym clothes, a water park, or some kind of lotion that slims you up and makes you look like you’re skinny in all the right places.

I’ve never seen Seohyun in a risque commercial for anything, ever, so I assumed that somehow this would be a commercial that promotes healthy living. Oh, I’m so silly. Because half-way into the commercial, we get this:

This pisses me off like no other. The girls were born in 89, 90, 91. Whoever’s doing a strip tease is wearing a halter, and it looks like that’s Seohyun, and if that’s so, that’s an even a bigger offense. She was born in 91, for fuck’s sake.

And right now, there are no guys who are more objectified than 2PM, especially Taec. Male objectification, while it does have its implications, don’t have the same historical context as female objectification, so I take more of an issue with how SNSD are portrayed here. It annoys me so much that Korea constantly relies on exploiting sexuality in their youth in order to sell a product. Using sex to sell is inevitable in any entertainment industry, but can we at least try to be ethical about it and use models who are age appropriate and can own their sexuality?

Dudes, it’s like 50% official, isn’t it? All we’re waiting for is a statement from SM and some webbie out there can officially put on TVXQ’s Wikipedia page that their status is “disbanded as of 2010.” DBSK to stop Japanese activities.

I think from the moment Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu sued SM and Yunho and Changmin didn’t, I was expecting them to break up somewhere down the line. DBSK is a group that doesn’t do well with solo activities, and whether or not it’s due to their success that SM has always pushed for them to do more and more and more and more as a group, it really works out for the best because the five of them complement each other well.

They are my only true Kpop fandom but I can honestly say that I expect none of them to do well as solo artists. If they could, SM would’ve pushed for that pre-debut. In a way, it’s kind of a cycle. None of them started out as solo-star material as trainees, so they debuted together, and in working together, they learned to be in sync with each other, and in being in sync with each other, they deviated further and further away from picking up qualities that make a great solo star, ranging from personal traits to technical skills. How many of Junsu’s inner torments are revealed on Japanese variety shows because the other members egg him on? Who’s gonna do that when Junsu goes solo? How has Yunho been able to achieve a lower and lower bass every time they come out with acappella tracks? Who the eff is he going to harmonize with when he’s by himself? Who is Changmin going to snark on? Who’s gonna make Jaejoong dance less like some kind of weirdly drugged bird? Who’s Yoochun gonna rub his crappy preference of wearing flip flops on?

I am expecting people to argue with me already, but if they all went solo, I don’t think their success is going to go beyond having a core group of fans outside of the ones that already liked them from DBSK days. They will never achieve the same level of success as what they’ve achieved as a group together. This is the way Korean pop culture works in Korea. Groups always do better than the solo artists that come out of a group’s disbandment.

I’m sure Yoochun and Jaejoong would do the ballad thing and Changmin might do the light ballad & maybe light dancing thing, and Yunho would maybe perform the same kind of music that Junsu would perform. The only member that is well-rounded enough to breeze through the traditional requirements of Kpop idoldom is Junsu, what with the perfect dancing and singing, but I don’t really see Junsu as having that solo star quality about him, and I love the boy to death. I have never once been impressed by any of their solo performances during Korean or Japanese concerts and none of them have ever wow’ed me with performances by themselves. Together though, they can pretty much blow everything else away.

I’m mad that the five of them didn’t sue together. I’m disappointed in the shitty way that the Korean idol system works. I’m pissed off at the way SM is not trying harder — DBSK is the biggest economic asset they’ve ever had, and could’ve KEPT having. Adjusting their contracts in order to allow the five members to earn more money is not going to be a huge loss compared to the money the group could have continued to earn the company.

Korea’s idol system just needs a bigass rehaul. It shouldn’t be done at the expense of the industry losing one of its best groups.

Dear two dudes who have the lofty and great profession of being YG’s only stylists,

Can we stop styling while tripping on acid? Is it just too hard to stop throwing all the shit you found at the bottom of your draw onto a piece of clothing? I get that it was really cool and refreshing when you first put dolls together into a circle formation and deemed it a “bracelet” and then let CL wear it on stage, but maybe we should stop at one toy-strung-bracelet.

I know that you guys (or one of you guys) went to Central Saint Martins for ~fashun~ and ~design~ but can we stop with this shit? Can we stop trying so hard?

One thing I really hate about Twitter and the way its importance has been heightened in our media system is that any huge person’s death will bring about the 1) Twitter responses, 2) investigations to said person’s Twitter.

Right now we don’t have any celebrity/stylist/fashion guru’s Twitter hashtag responses to Alexander McQueen’s death yet, but there will probably be an outpour of it as the day goes on. Currently, what we do have is the explosion of micro-investigating of everything Alexander McQueen has ever tweeted about, which really annoys me. Yes, some signs are obvious but maybe it’s not up to us to analyze the feelings of distress that someone else experiences, and then speak on behalf of them about what exactly they were going through?

Same thing that happened to Daul Kim. People think they were the master guru’s and knew exactly and without probable doubt that “Say hi to forever” is the one indication that Daul Kim was going to kill herself and that it was her last letter to the world.

I don’t condemn journalistic investigation, but I think up to a certain point, if you cross that line you’re officially prying, and not really investigating anymore. I hate journalists who make sweeping, grandiose statements after reading five Twitter messages and conclude once and for all that a person was blah blah blah.

But Twitter rant aside, this is a massive loss to the fashion community. May you rest in peace, Alexander McQueen.

SNSD’s concept makes it so hard to like SNSD as a Kpop project, regardless of how the girls are personally. Their concept has never really changed (with the exception of maybe “Genie”); it just adapts itself with each promotional period by tweaking hair, makeup, and accessories.

I think SNSD’s concept planners are a decade behind with the idea of girl groups, because I think that SNSD is the worst in Kpop when it comes to redefining what being a girl group means. People already make fun of SNSD as it is for being the 9 [insert your own derogatory adjective here] beauties, and their management isn’t keen at all about embracing individuality and promoting all of the girl’s potentials. Wearing identical outfits for every performance, with maybe a difference in jean color and shoe color (Gee), wearing the same outfits and same everything (Genie), wearing identical extensions and being fucking cheerleaders (Oh). Music concept-wise, SNSD is the ultimate example of embracing conformity. On the international music scene, girl groups don’t seem to have much cache left, but that doesn’t mean that Korea can’t keep putting them out and doing well with the girl group idea.

My ultimate grudge against SNSD is not against the girls themselves, but the kind of male management that’s behind them, because I am pretty much 100% sure that their images are decided by males, for males, to appeal to men’s wishes. It’s so tired, uncreative, sexist, and the worst is that they all have to act like they’re lapping this shit up by playing up the winking, head tilting, heart-making, nervous shaking. And I’m sure all that wasn’t for my benefit. It disgusts me and makes me disappointed because I want to see stronger girls in play.

I’d rather stick to watching them do dance covers forever if that’s the only thing I’ll get:

From Kate Moss, re: the new line of Longchamp bags she designed, specially in reference to the one in this image,

The emerald green pochette, whose color I love, I wanted to be very simple, based on the shape of an envelope. I would wear it with all black or all navy. Because I love to wear dove grey, I wanted a bag in that color to go with my grey jeans.

- “based on the shape of an envelope”

WOW, nobody ever thought of that before.

- “I would wear it with all black or all navy”

Really now. What a fascinating color combination.

- “Because I love…dove grey, I wanted a bag..to go with my grey jeans”

Is this Kate Moss speaking? She of veteran almighty supermodel status, done-every-campaign-for-every-designer-ever? Or is this a 6th grader who discovered that Aeropostale/Abercrombie/American Eagle sold jeans in colors other than blue? And then subsequently needed a matching handbag for an outing with that boy she has a crush on?

Sometimes, it’s no wonder most people think fashionistas are pretentious fucks. Because they will say those things. And then proceed to drop half a grand on that ugly emerald green pochette. Because Kate Moss designed it. For Longchamp.

For their Spring issue, V Magazine is dedicated to showcasing plus-sized models in an effort to illustrate that oh em gee, plus-sized models are beautiful too!

Just like the first ever “All Black” issue of Italian Vogue from a while back, I liked the idea and I was interested in the final product that the respective companies were going to show its readers but I don’t think these issues are going to do shit in the grand scheme of things. Given the opportunity, I would love for there to be a first “All Asian” issue of any Vogue, but I think these attempts to try and “enlighten” the masses — by attempting to say that beauty is everywhere — are superficial and won’t make a dent at all in what truly matters.

Taking the example of the Black issue and the plus-sized issue of the magazines, it’s problematic that there needs to be a separation of Black models and plus-sized models from what we regularly see in magazines already. Like, they can only exist intermittently in all our regular issues, but unless we dedicate a whole “lookit me!” issue with only models of a certain look, they don’t fit into our standard beauty ideals. They have to appear in every single issue and without any head honcho editor pointing out in glee, “Look! Look at how progressive we are! Look at this Black model! And this plus-sized one! Oh and we’ll throw in an Asian one too!”

Bah.
