I’m all about the styling of Han Ga-in’s Moon Jae-in in this one.

The guys are standard suits and chaebol-wear, and everyone looks sharp, but it’s nothing to write home about. Moon Jae-in, on the other hand, I love. I’m not that interested in how the Hong family daughters are dressed because it looks like typical expensive-women wear, and that bores me.

The one winning thing about a good majority of Jae-in’s outfits is that her shoes give her rather girly get-ups a sharper, harder edge. She almost always wear badass biker boots, either with stacked heels or no heels at all. Everything else about her outfits are extremely girly — pastel blouses, slouchy button-downs — but once you look down at her shoes, the feeling completely changes.

There’s a new SBS variety show called “Heroes” with an all-female cast (minus the MCs) — IU, Kara’s Nicole, After School’s Gahee, Shin Bong-sun, Lee Ga-eun, Yoo In-ah, T-ara’s Ji-yeon, BEG’s Narsha, Seo In-young, No Sa-yeon, Hong Soo-ah, Finkl’s Lee Jin.

The episode begins with the cast members arriving one by one to a remote location, inside a warehouse, where there are two tables set up. One table is labeled “popular team,” and the other is labeled “unpopular team.” As the members arrive one by one, they’re supposed to decide which table to sit at.

This is the awkward and stupid part: the sunbaes in the industry obviously feel like they belong at the popular table, and the eldest unnies who are also the most senior in experience feel even more of a reason to sit at the popular table. This leaves: jokes about Shin Bong-sun, and jokes about the younger members.

Seniority is a big deal in Asian culture, and I understand that. Women like Noh Sa-yeon and Lee Jin have been in the industry for forever, and do have a lot of work experience that people, say, IU don’t have. But the problem I have with Asia’s sense of seniority is that somehow it trumps everything (both seniority in age and in experience). Look, things in the industry are a lot different now than they were ten years ago. I know that the elder sunbaes have had to pay their dues many times over to be where they are, but it’s so embarrassing to watch them single out newbies like they o b v i o u s l y do not know anything or they can’t possibly be knowledgeable of this, this, or that.

So you get the younger girls being embarrassed to admit their popularity for fear of appearing haughty — because we know that it’s double whammy to be both haughty and a haughty female — when I’m sure audiences know someone like IU is sure as hell more relevant now than Lee Jin.

To preface, I love this couple. I have a bit of a Victoria weakness, but hey Nichkhun’s amusin’.

This episode, was not. It’s like watching an episode of a bad K-drama where you’re just hitting yourself in the head because the second female lead is doing stuff that only a second female lead would do to pursue a crush on a male lead — stay up all night to make food, follow-up on a promise meticulously …

This is now becoming one of those unfortunate stories where the girl is a little bit too much into the guy and talks about it happily with her girlfriends and then the guy’s like whaaaatevaaaazzzzz yo, I don’t need to do shit and I’ll still charm your panties off!! I hope Vic lays the smackdown and makes Khun work for it a little bit more.

I think the couple has a lot of chemistry and I hope it exists outside the show, but Vic is more believable than Khun, only because Khun is a helluva sweet talker and I’m glad Vic doesn’t fall for that shit so easily. (Though I wish she’d lighten up in thinking that this was actually a real relationship…)

So, uh, the last two episodes of “Moon Lovers” have been really painful watch, so instead of doing that I’ll spam you with the styling, with an emphasis on the guys. (I tend to care more about how men are styled than women, eh?)

Japanese fashion is totally different than Korean fashion. There’s more stress on function and practicality over appearance. Things like how lightweight and durable a piece is is really important to Japanese design. Texture is also super important, and you can see that in the variety of materials used for the suit jackets that Kimura Takuya’s character wears.

Most of these are going to be regarding Rensuke’s (Kimura) style, because he’s the protagonist, and let’s face it, he’s the most interesting anyway. Ren is the president of a relatively large company, so the standard president-work-uniform is there — blazer, pressed pants, button-down — but what I really love about how he’s styled in this drama in particular is that the uniform is mixed in with a laissez faire feel, noticeable in things like throwing in a t-shirt, matching suits with non-preppy shoes, etc.

THE UNIFORM

Let’s start with the full-body shots.

Kimura Takuya is not really a model by any standards. He’s on the short side and just doesn’t have the build of a model, which is why the tailoring on his suits have to be precise, or else he’ll drown in them or look too stumpy. That’s remedied by the his tendency (his stylist’s?) to leave things unbuttoned and not tucked in as to not box him in.

God, can we just look at those GQMFs right there. Just look at them.

Anyhoo, I’ve been meaning to watch a Kimura Takuya drama for forever but I’m still pretty new to Japanese fandom in general, and getting into a new country’s fandom is intense. Every kind of fandom — TV, film, books — has its own rules, and even moreso if the fandom originates from another country. I’m already comfortable in my Korean — and to a lesser extent, Chinese — pop bubble, because I know where to look for discussions on the pop culture and I know where to find that material on my own to sample it. Totally not fluent in J-fandom, which is why I’ve really put it off for so long. Also, I have a huge problem remembering Japanese names. They’re so much longer than their East Asian counterparts D:

More rambling after the jump, oh and yeah, off to watch every single drama Kimura Takuya has ever done.

(P.S. Already groaning at the fact that this is going to be 20 episodes long. By about episode 14, I’m going to start cursing excessively at illogical plot turns and ridiculous lapses in judgment.)

(P.P.S. Is it weird that I find all of the characters’ names really pretty? Tae-ra, Mo-nae, Jae-in, Gun-wook.)

Artistically speaking, the Lautner shoot has nothing on the Pattinson one. The Details one is pretty fanfuckingtastic for the eye. (You can see the full GQ shoot here and the full Details one here.)

Unfortunately, I — who did really, really, really like R Patts in Harry Potter (RIP, Cedric) — am Team Taylor. Robert Pattinson possesses about as much social grace as a sock does. He can’t give an interview without squirming and making me squirm. I’m sure he has some anxiety issues, and it’s pretty obvious from the things he says in interviews, but he just doesn’t look like a homey to me. I would not want to chill with him. Also, he has Z-E-R-O chemistry with Kristen Stewart.

Taylor Lautner on the other hand… mmmm.

I should stop before I reveal that I’ve seen one too many Twilight movies.

What the eff was this? I get so mad when big budget movies have no plot and have a shitty script. This franchise is big enough that it can throw some money at some decent writers, so why didn’t they? This was mind-numbingly bad.

Which is just great, because I watched this just two days after watching the worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life:

Two consecutive movies based on a plot involving lands in the Middle East and of course both are offensive. We will never, ever get it right.
