Taeyang – Break Down

Easily, with no competition, my favorite track off the album. This song is my jam for the summer. I wish he promoted this song instead of “I Need a Girl” :(

“Solar” as a whole was really underwhelming and too simplistic. I didn’t dislike anything, but it was a lot of “meh’s” and shrugging. Nowhere near how good his “HOT” album was, unfortunately.

The second half of the album was much better than the first, though listening to Move may be the only time I listened to a fellow Asian rap in English and gotten goosebumps out of undying embarrassment. It was greasy, cheesy, and so disgustingly unoriginal. I felt dirty listening to it.

Favorite song: Break Down
Songs I really like: Superstar, 니가 잠든 후에
Songs I didn’t used to like, but because of how boring the album is, I ended up liking: Wedding Dress, Where U At
The rest: Meh.

I’m not complaining though, I’ve been waiting for this album and some new material from Taeyang, and I got it. Like I said before, I don’t hate anything, a lot of these songs just aren’t as compelling as I expected them to be.

ah i agree, i didn’t dislike anything as such, but im slightly disappointed.. on the whole a forgettable album, good for easy background music listening but nothing more
lol about ‘move’ – i haven’t listened to it, but now i’m torn between whether to or not
though i do actually like ‘i need a girl’ – i think gd’s rapping (yeh, i know) really lifts it

but there’s one thing i’ve had with some of taeyang’s songs – the lyrics are seriously cringe-y(?)
*i need a girl: ‘뭘 해도 이쁜 몸매도 이쁜’ .. ‘김치볶음밥은 내가 잘 만들어 대신 잘 먹을 수 있는 여자’ – HUH?! lol kinda cute, but he doesn’t sound comfortable singing it in any case
*나만바라봐: ‘내가 바람 펴도 너는 절대 피지마 Baby’ .. ‘가끔 내가 연락이 없고 술을 마셔도 혹시 내가 다른 어떤 여자와 잠시 눈을 맞춰도 넌 나만 바라봐’ – bleurgh, as a song you don’t think much of it, but when it’s just read it sounds terrible

and i hope ‘break down’ will be his follow-up song to promote! it’s summery and cute, and i can see some good choreography happening for it (which i dont see in ‘i need a girl’ atm)

I’ve been trying to put my finger on what made me so indifferent about this album considering what a Taeyang fangirl/stan I am. I think you pretty much nailed it when you said it’s not as compelling as “HOT” was. I think for the most part the tracks are easy to listen to while “HOT” had incredible tracks such as ‘죄인’ or ‘나만바라봐’ The tension and drama in ‘죄인’ was too electrifying. I personally find it hard to replace that song. Indeed, the lyrics to ‘나만바라봐’ are so terrible but thats what makes the song so interesting. The album had some sort of cohesion, some sort of story unfolding. I really appreciated this quality.

So Amy, I’m really surprised that your favorite track from the album was “Break Down.” Based on the music you’ve posted, I thought this would be the last song to make it on your favorite list. Not judging, just saying.

Interesting that you say that. I liked “Break Down” immediately because it has a slightly whimsical beat beneath the heavy drums and different layers of sounds (it reminded me of BB’s “Everything,” which is probably my favorite track by BB). Second thing is that I liked that it even had layers at all. Everything else so far on that album was pretty much one sound, and then him singing to that melody. I like that “Break Down” sounded so full. I don’t know if these explanations really make sense :3

But of course, NO track on the album is the Solar version of “죄인” :(
