f(x)’s “NU ABO”

You know how in a lot of songs, you hear a line in the studio version and everything’s fine, and then when you see it performed live, you’re like, “Oh, so that’s how it’s supposed to go?? Huh.”

That’s me with Sulli’s spoken/rapped/half-sung line where she first sidles with Luna and then switches off to Krystal. It sounded a little out of place tonally and I hate this stupid half rap/half spoken/half something else thing that’s been going on in SM songs (like Sunny, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung’s lines in “Run Devil Run”). I don’t know because I’m not a performer, singer, or dancer, but it seems like speaking lines while dancing is harder to do than singing, because when you speak you have to go at an assured pace, and it’s hard to do that when you’re out of breath and have generally been going with a melodic flow. The speaking punctures the flow.

Other than that, I love the choreography for this song. It’s another piece of Rino work and I love you can tell she choreographed this. Rino’s choreography is really nuanced and has a lot of little movements that are hard to catch because they happen so intricately and they’re not part of a “hook” move that’s meant to be repeated over and over again. (This, like I’ve said, is not factoring in the stupid work she did for “Genie.”) I love the part where everyone shuffles to the left as Amber does her first verse; I love the Sulli/Luna and Sulli/Krystal coupling as Suli does her lines; I pretty much just love everything.

I may like the choreo more than the song itself, but the song is a helluva lot better than LA cHA TA and Chu. It’s a shame that Super Junior’s coming back next week — NU ABO will mostly be ignored after that.

Beast’s “Special”

1. I wish they stuck with the white suits from Music Bank. They looked FLY. AS. HALE.

2. I wish Junhyung stopped saying “atom bomb” like “A-town bum.” (He did this in Amerie’s collab with 4minute too. Drove me crazy.)

3. I don’t know why people don’t like the choreography for “Special.” I LOVE the leg jig they do when they sing “Bounce with me.” It’s so fun! Beast is really good (or their choreographer is really good) with those weird moves that look kinda cool and kinda lame at the same time. When you watch it for the first time, it’s like “WTF? Oh, alright. I can get on board with that.” See: their “Mystery” head tilt.

I really like Beast because it seems like while everyone is not a super fantastic singer or super fantastic dancer, they’re all pretty well-rounded. Maybe this is because I’m biased and I watched all of their MTV documentary (…pretend like you don’t know that…) but I’ve seen everyone practice their singing and their dancing and I liked what I saw. Dongwoon is a liiiiittle raw and can use a little more practice, but I’m pretty happy with their performances in general. I don’t like their first singles as much as their follow-up ones (hated “Bad Girl” and “Shock,” so boring and predictable) but I liked “Mystery” and now “Special” much, much more.

Also have to declare that Kikwang is so good looking that I get a little weak in the knees from looking at him, but he should stop teasing with the muscles and the abs. It’s old game now.

Gummy’s “There is No Love” and “Because of You”

I don’t know why, but Gummy has no stage personality. She’s always really awkward and uncomfortable to watch, which is a shame because I like “There is No Love” and I like Gummy’s voice in general. The melody in “There is No Love” is seductive and I like that it builds up and builds up. The transition into “Because of You” is weird because the second song is boring ballad territory.

I’m surprised Gummy doesn’t have much of a “concept” going on here. I mean, she’s typically a ballad singer so I think the lack of flashiness is to be expected, but a little black dress? Pony-tail? Heels? Really?? Even Baek Ji-young wouldn’t do that.

Gummy also performed “As a Man,” but I’m not posting that because the song is downright boring. Teddy produced and it sounds like a more grown-up version of 2NE1’s “I Don’t Care.” Teddy needs to go on a long vacation and come back with some new beats.

i love the “NU ABO” choreography! definitely!
and like you said, i may even love it more than the song itself.

I totally agree about beast, I love them – at first I was leaning mblaq (god knows why, I think I was too attracted to Joon >.<) and ignoring beast, but what a mistake, they are way better!

I like the nu abo choreo a lot but the shirt lifting is…interesting. haha. it's sooo hard to forget that krystal is what…14? 15? O_O
