You’re Beautiful, episode 9

Maybe I’m over-hyping this show all by myself, but my reactions throughout this entire episode were all pretty much near-catastrophic squees. I haven’t had this much fun watching a K-drama ever. The pace of this drama is really smooth, the writing is smart, and the cast is wonderful. Even though I have my grievances towards Shinwoo/Minam not working out, Taekyung/Minam is written really well and really believably.
My brief rundowns are turning out to be not-so-brief anymore…
Brief rundown of episode 9

After getting that psychological smackdown from his mother, Taekyung goes back to the studio to sit down and make some music. Minam watches him and feels bad that he didn’t get to do anything special for his birthday, so she does little odds and ends for him to make things go smoother. When he runs out of water, she grabs a bottle for him and replaces it before he notices. When a light in the studio flickers consistently, she goes to change it before he can.

Of course, Taekyung is a smart cookie, so he finds it weird that all these things miraculously fixed themselves. To test out his theory, he loudly says to no one in particular that he wants a steaming cup of coffee. Minam goes to fetch him a cup, but before she gets back to him Taekyung stops her and asks her what the hell she’s doing. Minam almost confesses that she saw what took place between Taekyung and his mother, but decides against it and apologizes instead for opening a package that was made out to him.

So, what should they do with the remainder of his birthday? They go and get seaweed/miso soup, which is a food traditionally eaten on birthdays, but this soup is made with a sesame oil, which Taekyung is allergic to, so no go. (Drinking game every time we find out Taekyung is allergic to something.) Well okay, then Minam can get him a birthday present, no? The two go into a dinky stationery store because that’s the only place that’s still open and it’s full of things that…Taekyung does not want.

Before his birthday is over, Minam gives Taekyung just one more thing — a hug like her Mother Superior used to give her every year on her birthday, along with the comforting words that it’s a blessing for him to have been born, it makes the day special.

Taekyung and Minam continue to film their music video, and Heyi is on set of course. Minam doesn’t have the quickest uptake on Heyi’s personality, but Heyi on the other hand is too quick to notice that Minam has what looks to be a girl’s pin. But that can’t be, right? Because Minam is a boy? Minam lies and says that it’s “his younger sister’s,” but when she drops it later on, Heyi snatches it up and takes it for her own.

After the music video filming wraps up, everyone goes out to celebrate. Minam is still feeling extremely bummed out for losing the pin. Shinwoo notices her bad mood and offers to help her look for it, but due to constant misunderstandings, Minam’s manager keeps thinking that Minam might like Shinwoo and vice versa, so he does everything to keep the two apart, which includes making Taekyung take care of Minam while he takes care of Shinwoo, lol.
Stupidly enough for Heyi, she purposely bumps into Taekyung and tries to start a conversation with him, all the while wearing Minam’s pin to bait Minam. Of course, she doesn’t know that Taekyung is the one who bought it for Minam, and after some grilling, Taekyung determines that Heyi was indeed lying about the whereabouts of her pin and takes it back from her. Right when he was going to tell Minam that he found it, Minam bravely tells him that it’s okay, she’s going to stop looking for it. LOL another FML-worthy moment for Taekyung.

Heyi is pissed off at Minam, but she overhears a little suttin’ suttin’ that totally allows her to get her bitch on. She nicely urges Minam to go up on stage and sing a Christmas carol for everybody (“Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”), and just as Minam does, Heyi pushes a button that releases water straight down to the stage, soaking Minam completely. In a moment of complete shock for everyone, Minam struggles to decide what to do. Just then, Shinwoo steps in and continues to sing the next line of the carol, with Jeremy stepping in after that. Taekyung goes in to do more damage control and grabs a towel off the table to wrap around Minam’s soaked self. The best part is that ANJell now does the carol together and everyone has a grand ole time.

Afterwards when the four are headed back home on their van, Jeremy and Shinwoo talk about how Minam lost something and still hadn’t found it. Shinwoo relays that she looked pretty upset the entire night, and Taekyung realizes during this that Minam was only putting a front about not wanting to find the pin. Once he gets home, he OCD-ly debates how and whether or not he should give the pin back to Minam.
Being the huge pathetic softy he is (I say this with all the love in my heart), he decides he has to give the pin back. But because Taekyung can’t settle for anything less than fabulous and amazingness and jjang-ness, he decides to give to her in a rabbit-like pig way. Meaning…exactly what that sounds. He puts a rabbit and a pig doll together and clips the pin on it, and puts it by Minam’s bed when she’s asleep.

For a cellphone commercial that the band has to endorse, the four members dress up to represent different colors. Taekyung wears green and has to suck on limes (FML), Jeremy wears yellow and eats bananas, Shinwoo wears black and strokes a dog, and Minam wears white and sniffs white flowers. Coo’.

Unfortunately for Minam, people seem to keep making her choose between the three boys during this episode, so she was asked which color she liked best. She stoically answers she likes black (Shinwoo) because black is a man’s color and she’s a man, duh. Taekyung is not happy so when the two are on a break he asks her which color she really likes as a girl. Minam dumbfoundedly answers white, but it doesn’t really matter what she answers because Heyi overhears and she truly wants to murder a baby.
When Minam goes to the bathroom, Heyi follows. It’s the guy’s room, but Heyi coldly says that that’s the wrong bathroom, isn’t it? Minam should be in the girl’s room, shouldn’t she? She tells Minam that she knows everything and drags her out to let everyone know. But just one more thing, what color does she like?
Jeremy, Shinwoo, or Taekyung?
The first thing of Jang Geun Seok’s work I ever watched in full was “Hong Gil Dong.” I liked him and his character in that but I ragged on him a lottttt for some of his acting quirks. Turns out that two dramas later, he makes those quirks work really well for his Hwang Taekyung in this drama.
I think that Jeremy’s really intense interest and investment in Minam’s well-being is a little surprising and raises my eyebrows slightly, but really, that’s such a small thing in a drama that’s so far been very realistic and very believable, so I can suspend some disbelief. (I mean I watched “Boys Over Flowers” didn’t I?) While I think that it feels just a little overwhelming that all three guys are all seeking her approval all at once, I think it’s nice that a lot of the times the three of them are watching out for her just like oppas do a dongsaeng (minus Jeremy). It’s nice.
Heyi. Oh Heyi. A character as fanatical and obsessive as hers in a Kdrama nowadays seems like an anomaly, because I seriously thought those second female leads were a thing of the last decade. Conniving, manipulative, straight out fucking bitchy. Uee does a really good job with her role because I can feel my blood simmer every time I see her face, but seriously, can we get a nice, normal, only slightly competitive second lead sometime instead of a psychotic one?

Just curious, but where do you watch your K-Dramas? I know Dramafever doesn’t have this one up yet, so I was just wondering.
I download the raws and I download Chinese subbed episodes. The raws you can find at places like Aja-Aja, but Chinese subbed episodes I prowl Soompi forums for :)
I love Heyi! As much as I hate to admit it, Uee really does act the hell out of Heyi. You really do want to punch somebody nearby every time she shows up. After 9 eps, I really can’t stand Park Shinhye’s acting any longer. In some scenes she absolutely gets on my nerve with her try-too-hard-acting(I may be the only one to think so but PSH is the weakest out of the characters, losing even to Uee). But seriously, aren’t nuns taught how to live cleanly and orderly? Minam is such a bumbling fool that I really can’t buy MiNyu’s background as a nun. As for Jeremy, yeh, his feeling goes through a story of its own. Dislike > Jealousy > Confusion > Infatuation. Weird, but buyable as a story, kinda.
I’m on the fence about Park Shin Hye. On the one hand, you can’t really blame her character’s faults on her acting, on the other hand, I just don’t really like Minam/Minyeo’s quirks, and those I think you can hold Shinhye responsible for. She’s good sometimes when she has to be serious, but when she has to act cutesy because of her “mannerisms” as a nun, then I’m turned off. At least she’s not as bad as Geum Jandi….?
exactly! that’s what I was so peeved about. She’s a good actress, I just thing the cutesy stuffs accumulated and I couldn’t stand it anymore. One quirk I do love is her puppy eyes though. I couldn’t finish BOF after ep.5 so I’m not sure if Jandi got…cuter….but from what I watched of her trying to be tough, yes, ,cringeworthy.
Yeah Park Shinye does overact sometimes. When she say the pig-rabbit and freaked out it was a little much but I think shes believably dumb and I like her. Uee is my favorite on the show I love every time shes on screen, hopefully she gets taekyung. Really.
