You’re Beautiful, episode 6

I thought this was an insanely good episode. Had a good dose of humor and drama. I just hope the Hong sisters keep going on this track till the end and don’t decide to wangst us the hell out midway through.

I really liked Tae Kyung in this episode, and I’ve always liked Shin Woo more, but now my fan feelings for both are starting to level out. I know that the Tae Kyung + Mi Nam pairing is pretty much decided from the get-go, but I’ve always liked my secondary leads better and Shin Woo is a pretty good second lead. The thing that frustrates me most about secondary male leads and main female leads is that the females are almost always written to be very one-track with their feelings. I’m not saying that K-dramas should start writing polygamous relationships (but hey if they do, I’ll watch) but it’s almost like watching a pathetic puppy whine when situations are SO against the second male lead. It’s just blow after blow after blow and for what reason, I don’t even know. All the second lead does is give and give and give but just get screwed over repeatedly because the female metaphorically doesn’t even know he exists. Makes a watcher like me velly, velly sad.

And I think something interesting that this episode illustrated is how K-dramas really like to reinforce “the” girl who’s loyal almost to a point of fault. Her loyalty to Tae Kyung is not baseless — he does really have her best interests at heart, even if he doesn’t outwardly show it — but I’ve noticed that most K-dramas tend to discourage female characters from loving, liking, even looking at more than one guy. I think this is the reason I’m a lot short-tempered with female leads than male leads because they’re given so little leeway, which usually leads them to do really, really stupid shit while stuck in their tiny crowded box devoid of freedom. (Also, another problem I have with Mi Nam’s character is that I’m not sure if ultimately her profession as a nun helps (male) viewers situate her as someone who’s virginal and pure because while Korea already loves and fantasizes about those sort of women, it’s easier to justify now because she actually is a nun.)

But I just want to say that this entire cast is SO charming. They are so fit for their characters it’s almost alarming how it’s impossible to dislike anyone (with the exception of Uee’s character, maybe). The manager is HILARIOUS. His stylist friend, Stylist Wang, is abusive but just the right amount of aggressive mixed in with HILARITY. Hong Ki is my new favorite person. He overreacts a tiny bit sometimes but it’s easy to overlook when his character is actually that dunderheaded. The fanclub president is actually incredibly likeable. I wonder how she’s going to factor into the story because this drama ain’t a real idols’ drama if netizen reaction did not have some huge influence on the storyline, lol. The president is so lame but so hilarious at the same time. He has the “try-too-hard” syndrome but it’s hilarious nonetheless. (I realize I’ve used “hilarious” about 16 times in this paragraph alone, but there really is no other word for it.)

And just on a last note: Shinwoo’s stalker pseudo-date with Mi Nam is incredibly lively and energetic while simultaneously being depressing as fuck in retrospect. I was literally chanting a mantra, “Look at him, look at him, lookathim, lookathim, LOOK AT HIM OMGGGGGGGG” during the entire scene. Sigh, it’s just not meant to be.

Until next time, I leave you with this:

I don’t even know who Yong Hwa is supposed to be (Yuri?) but every time I see him make that fake coy face, pangs of love just burst forth. Note Hongki’s dramatic “I’m Jessica. I’m Jessica. I’m Jessica, bitch!” face.
