SS 2010 shows, part six: 3.1 Phillip Lim
And wrapping up my NYFW posts is my favorite show from the New York shows: 3.1 Phillip Lim. I would post all pictures from the collection + backstage, but that’s what Style.com’s for. (Show, details, backstage.)

It annoys me how many people are shitting bricks over the pieces that look too much like Rodarte/Miu Miu dresses. I agree that they look SO obvious and that he’s a designer who can do so much better and I’m a little disappointed in Phillip Lim for those lookalikes. But my qualm with the reaction is how fashion critics are OCD and random with who they decide to slam regarding similar looks. Zac Posen used a lot of motifs in his SS 2010 collection that were similar to those in a past Viktor & Rolf’s collection, and there’s a paint-splattered dress from Michael Kors’ SS 2010 collection that looks exactly like a past Narciso Rodriguez dress, and none of those guys got picked on. I want to say that this is because Posen and Kors are more established designers in the industry, but part of me is almost afraid to say that maybe it’s easier to pick on Phillip Lim because he is a Chinese American designer who’s ripping off white designers. Fashion has never been an industry that’s very race-conscious or that even attempts to try to look like it doesn’t favor displaying white faces over every other kind of face. I don’t know the kind of racial politics that goes behind the doors regarding the designers themselves (and the races of these designers), but hopefully there are more people who research, study, and write about it.
