I've since watched the movie and while I do think all of them gave strong performances, none of them were really Oscar-worthy. But had any of them given Oscar-worthy performances and were still not given actor nods, I would think that it would be a case of white-actor-before-all-the-rest.

ah, the Oscars and it's politics.

It was Patel's and Pinto's 1st movies, so...

Either way the whole cast did win for best ensemble at the SAGs, so they did get some recognition.

all the chibi versions were able to share in all of the glory, cool. ^^

you know the lead in the Dragonball-Z movie is white too...
they are using the excuse that GoKu in the cartoon was an alien and was never specified as a Asian or any race... but come on...

Do NOT even talk to me about the whitewashed casting in Avatar. I seethe every time I think about it. Have you read this stupid shit?

http://www.racialicious.com/2009/01/22/avatar-get-a-tan-become-asian/

And regarding "I agree all flims are social commentary no matter what the genre is.."

Similar to what I said to Nia, I think there's a difference between a film being social commentary and a director being a social commentator. Something like "Not Another Teenage Movie" says a ton about the way white American society functions and what they place value in, but I don't think its director is in any way actively illustrating sociological discourse.

And I think Hollywood love these kind of films... and when you know that Hollywood's majority is made up of white hipster-like liberals its no surprise... its the same reason why a tragedy like "Hotel Rwanda" made multi millions at the box office.. Hollywood loves films that depict 3rd world societies and ohhhh and ahhhh at their problems...

also Dev Patel from Slumdog was cast in "Avatar" Last Airbender" a movie that was based on an Asian Anime but has NO ASIAN ACTORS OR ACTRESSES besides Patel... he wasnt even the first choice, Jesse McCartney was...

I'll play devil's advocate here: just because a film says something about society doesn't mean the director is a social commentator. These are extreme examples, but movies like "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "American Pie," "Eurotrip" all say something about society but that doesn't mean the people working on them are social commentators. Does that make sense?

And I totally see your point about the actors not getting nods bizz -- I'm just by nature cynical ;) But I wouldn't completely rule out speculation that the Indian actors didn't get acting noms because they were Indian, though.

Interesting pieces of the article there. I think I'll reserve judgement on the film until I actually see it though. I do disagree about Doyle not being a "social commentator", I've seen a good chunk of his filmography and his films are pieces of entertainment but they always say something about our society. And the actors not getting any nods, I can't comment on the actual acting, as I haven't seen the movie, but regarding how the system works, them not getting any acting nods doesn't really mean much. Now if the film had gotten all their nods and not a nod for picture of the year, then THAT would be saying something.
