F4 brawl

Upon rewatching this scene for the thousandth time, I realized what was bothering me about it the first 999 times — color scheme.

First, the lighting doesn’t help. The four are in an indoor basketball court with white lights, and they all look pretty ghostly to begin, but the lighting highlights this even more severely. Second, the thing that bothers me most, is that Yi Jung’s damn paisley bandanna matches the walls of the court, and Woobin’s hoodie matches with the dark blue stand of the basketball stand.

Dark blue, dark green, and dark red are all really strong colors by themselves and it’s hard to make them look good together. Granted, I’m fussing about colors on a basketball court, but that in conjunction with Yi Jung’s green bandanna and Woobin’s dark blue hoodie, it’s just too much. It bothers my eyes! And ultimately, Boys Over Flowers has already proved itself to be pretty undependable in terms of artistic merit…

In terms of the acting in this scene, I’m once again asking myself why Lee Minho shines so much more than all the other actors. I think part of it has to do with the obviously more complex character of Jun Pyo, but aside from that, in comparison to Kim Bum’s Yi Jung, Lee Minho’s reactions are a lot less forced. Kim Bum was very loud with his anger and to it didn’t convince me of the logic of Yi Jung getting riled up over this turn of events. Yes, YJ could’ve felt that Jun Pyo was really being a bastard in cutting ties with Jandi, but this isn’t congruent with the way that he’s been acting in the series thus far. He’s been rather vocal about siding with Jun Pyo during Jun Pyo’s quarrel with Ji Hoo, and he’s made several statements about how someone like Geum Jandi could shake up the F4 dynamic. He could’ve changed because of Ga-eul’s implication that he’s scared to fall in love and is thus angry with Jun Pyo for not taking advantage of what he has, but really, I don’t believe this. I guess overall, something about Yi Jung rubs me the wrong way and I’m not inclined to give him benefit of the doubt.

Oh yeah, I like Kim Bum. Love him. Wanna pet him every time I see his pretty face. But the more eps we get, the less I like Yi Jung because he’s revealing himself to be a very hard character underneath the constant smiley’s and smooth talk. Mostly, I just don’t like how he treats Ga-eul. Oh that and he’s supah sexist.

ah. true. I’ve been trying to figure out what bothers me about his character, and I think your comment finally put it into words haha

I always wonder how BOF would have ended up if hyunjoong and kim bum switched roles….kim bum could do better justice to jihoo’s character and hyunjoong is pretty and charming enough to fulfill the lesser requirements of yi jung’s character lol. cept then I might have to ship jihoo-jandi…I don’t feel as bad for hyunjoong as I think I would if it were kimbum >.<

I actually liked the fact that Yi-jung is the person to get mad. From his earlier conversation with Ga-eul, it’s revealed that Yi-jung (most likely) believes in soul mates and true love. His reaction to her reveals that he (most likely) was hurt from this whole ordeal. Earlier Yi-jung was so supportive of Jun Pyo because he believes that Jun Pyo really loves Jandi. However after seeing the way that Jun Pyo mistreats his “soul mate”, it ignites his own feelings and own hurt. Here, we see that Yi-jung does believe in love and that’s why he’s so mad that Jun Pyo is throwing this away. I might just be overthinking this, but I like to give the writer the benefit of the doubt.

OH, and regarding Kim Bum playing Ji-Hoo, this probably would not work if GHS plays Jandi. She looks like an older sister next to him. Sorry, GHS fans.

While I don’t necessarily buy that Yi Jung was in an instant transformed by Ga-eul’s words, I actually don’t have a problem with Yi Jung being the person who gets mad at Jun Pyo. I thought it was quite refreshing, because Ji Hoo — aside from the fact that Hyun Joong wold probably not have been able to carry this scene — doesn’t act this way. He doesn’t get brash to the point where he would shout angrily and intentionally look to be provoked by the words of Jun Pyo. So in that sense, I think that Yi Jung vs. Jun Pyo is much better than Ji Hoo vs. Jun Pyo.

My bigger problem with the scene is that Kim Bum wasn’t as good as I thought he’d be. I’ve been waiting all these episodes for Kim Bum to go beyond what’s been required of him as Yi Jung and he kindamaybesorta delivered. The anger didn’t feel as authentic as Jun Pyo’s false pretenses or his burdened “700 thousand” speech. Maybe it’s not fair to critique Kim Bum’s acting only as relative to Lee Minho’s, but I think the scene could’ve been a bit better.
